SEVEN people, among them four Zambians, have drowned on the Zambezi River in Mozambique after the boat they were in capsized.
Lusaka Province Police Chief Charity Katanga confirmed the death of the seven people whose boat capsized on Monday around 19:00 hours on their way back from buying fish.
The other three who died are Mozambicans.
Ms Katanga said the seven were among nine people that travelled to Zumbo District in Mozambique to buy fish.
A Zambian, Sherry Phiri 54, survived the accident together with a Mozambican man.
She identified the deceased as Patience Tinara, 22, a Ms Namukonde, while the other two had not yet been identified.
“The seven drowned on Monday at Zumbo, 80 kilometers from the Zambian side, three are Mozambicans including a police officer, four Zambians while two survived, preparations to have their bodies brought into the country are being made,” she said.
Meanwhile, two people have died on the spot while 27 others have sustained serious injuries when a Mansa-bound bus they were travelling in careered off the road and overturned.
The accident happened around 00:30 hours yesterday at Chitundwa Village in Samfya on the Serenje road.
Luapula Province Police Chief Hudson Namachila, said the Scania IRIZER bus registration number ABP 5560 driven by Enock Ngoma aged 48 years, of Mtendere Township in Lusaka overturned after the driver lost control.
Mr Namachila said the deceased are Richard Katebe, 42, of Elayabu village in Chief Kambwali’s area in Nchelenge and one unidentified woman.
He said 24 victims, including the driver, have been admitted to Samfya District Hospital while three others are at Mansa General Hospital.
