Mulungushi-UniversityBy SYLVIA MWEETWA –

ABOUT 10 students of Mulungushi University may not be allowed to write their examinations scheduled for next week if the institution establishes that they had not paid the correct school tuition fees.
Ten students at the University were apprehended by police and are being held in custody for allegedly forging bank deposit slips for fees to the university.
University management said it was working round the clock to ensure that any student found to have cheated by not paying the required amount would not sit for examinations.
Acting Mulungushi University chancellor Judith Lungu said in an interview, however, that it was not the intention of university to unfairly stop any student from writing the examinations but was of the view that any wrong doing must be treated as such.
Ms Lungu who is Deputy Chancellor said the university was saddened by the under payment of tuition fees and reminded students that consequences of engaging in such acts were serious and should not be taken lightly.
Currently, the university was reconciling the books of accounts to establish exactly how many students were under paying the institution and how long the trend had been going on.
“Currently we are reconcilling the books and we want to ensure the deposit slips tally with what was expected to be paid and those found to have uttered the slips and paid less will have to face the consequences, besides the police are already investigating the matter, “she said.
The amount involved in the scam could be over K200,000 but was likely to go up.
She denied the possibility of the involvement of any of its accounts staff at the university.
Last week, 10 students were picked up by police in connection with forging of deposits slips for tuition fees while two students suspected to be masterminds of the scam escaped the police dragnet.
Central Province Police Chief Lombe Kamukoshi said among the 10 were four female and six male students and that they were alleged to have tampered with figures on the deposit slips after depositing tuition fees into the Mulungushi University bank account.
They would then present their deposit slips with inflated figures to the university, indicating that they had deposited more than they actually had.
