ACTING Kazungula District Commissioner Goretti Bbalo has called for more programmes aimed at empowering vulnerable women in society as a strategy to eliminate poverty.
Ms Bbalo, who is Kazungula District Administrative Officer (DAO), said there was need to identify vulnerable women in society and empower them with starter business packages to eliminate poverty.
She was speaking in Kazungula last week when she handed over 10 kilogrammes (kg) bags of flour to 10 vulnerable women clubs.
The flour was donated by Superior Milling Company Limited to empower women in baking and entrepreneurship skills.
Ms Bbalo noted that most women were disadvantaged and vulnerable hence it was important to empower them with appropriate skills to mitigate poverty.
“Identify your fellow vulnerable women and empower them with starter packages so that we eliminate poverty in Kazungula.
“My office will monitor and evaluate the women who have been empowered today to ensure that they grow their businesses,” Ms Bbalo said.
Ms Bbalo said the Government would endeavor to encourage private companies to take advantage of the favourable business environment created to improve their businesses.
“We call upon private companies to take advantage of the existing favourable conditions to promote their businesses beyond their comfort zones and create employment opportunities for the local people,” Ms Bbalo said.
One of the beneficiaries, Anna Sitali, urged other women to take the empowerment activities seriously to improve the living standards in the community.
