A SERENJE farmer has been killed after he was hacked with a hoe and a shovel.
Unknown assailants stormed Lembwamu Kunda’s house and hacked him to death shortly after midnight on Saturday.
Deputy Central Province Commissioner of Police, Edwin Bwanga said that the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday.
Mr Kunda, 48, sustained multiple cuts on his head from a hoe and a shovel that are suspected to have been used in the act and investigations have since been launched.
At the time of the attack, Mr Kunda was alone in the house, as his wife and daughter were out of town visiting relatives.
Preliminary investigations indicated that he recently relocated to Luombwa area after differing with some people who could have followed him.
Mr Bwanga said no arrests had been made so far.
“We are investigating the case in which a farmer was brutally killed by unknown people but as police we suspect that he could have been followed by people he differed with, which forced him to relocate to another area,” he said.
The deputy police chief appealed to the public to assist with information leading to the arrest of the culprits.
In another development, police have arrested a Grade 12 pupil of Ibolelo Secondary School in Serenje for dumping a newly born baby in a pit-latrine.
Mr Bwanga said the pupil dumped her newly born baby in a pit-latrine around 02:00 hours on Sunday immediately after delivering.
The incident happened in Zambia Township where she was staying in a rented house with friends.
The pupil has since been charged with concealment of a baby and would appear in court soon.
