By MOSES CHIMFWEMBE –
BADMINTON Zambia (BZ) is backing budding star Kalombo Mulenga to defend his African title at the 2015 Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA), Under-15 Championship.
Kalombo was crowned champion during the 5th edition of the tournament staged in Uganda last year but BZ technical committee member Juma Muwowo is confident that the player will repeat the feat at the tournament that starts on April 3 to 9 in Cairo, Egypt.
The Under-15 Championship in Uganda was Kalombo’s first international outing where he produced an outstanding performance, outshining his opponents to win gold and scooped silver in the boys’ doubles together with Andrew Mumba.
Muwowo, who is also national team coach, said in an interview that Mulenga has improved greatly since winning the title last year.
“Kalombo has been training hard since winning the junior championship and he has showed improvements and I think he will defend the title,” Muwowo said.
Muwowo said with the experience gained last year, the junior player will be ready to win more medals at this year’s tournament.
Meanwhile, BZ general secretary Kingsley Mulenga has appealed for support from the corporate world to facilitate for the team’s travel to Egypt.
Mulenga said the association needs about K30,000 to send a five member team for the tournament and was confident that the players will mint medals in their respective categories.
