THE Livingstone Magistrate’s Court has convicted a Disc Jockey (DJ) and journalist working for Zambezi FM radio station in Livingstone for engaging in corrupt practices.
Danny Anakene, 39, of House Number DNB 111, Dambwa North in Livingstone was charged with one count of corrupt practice with a public officer contrary to the Laws of Zambia.
Details are that between November 1, 2012 and December 31, 2012 in Livingstone,
Anakene corruptly offered K4,000 to Vivian Chikoti, a town clerk then at the Livingstone City Council as an inducement for her to allocate him a piece of Land in Livingstone.
When the matter came up for judgment in Livingstone yesterday, Livingstone Resident Magistrate Chinkashi Chilingala said he found the accused guilty as charged and convicted him accordingly.
Mr Chilingala has since set March 30, 2015 as a date for mitigation and sentencing while Anakene has been remanded in custody.
He said Anakene had been convicted because he acted in a corrupt manner when he offered K4,000 to a public officer, Ms Chikoti, for a plot he never applied for.
Mr Chilingala said it was also overwhelming to note that the accused had not applied for a plot when he offered K4,000 and that there was no logic for the accused to seek acceptance of the money for a service that was not provided.
“I am reluctant to accept the explanation by the accused person that part of the K4,000 was for the payment of the plot fee and a gift for the services which were never provided.
“I am convinced that the K4,000 offer was meant to bribe Ms Chikoti and I have therefore, found the accused guilty as charged and convict him accordingly,” Magistrate Chilingala said.
