MEDIA Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia has challenged women in the media to fight for leadership positions in various media houses.
MISA Zambia chairperson Helen Mwale said the institution bemoaned gaps that existed in relation to the attainment of gender parity in the media sector.
Ms Mwale said the findings of the survey conducted by the Alchemy Women reviewed the gap that still existed in relation to the attainment of gender parity.
“In line with this year’s theme that says “Gender is my agenda, let’s make it happen” MISA wishes to urge women in the media to take up the challenge of running media houses and fight for positions in leadership,” she said.
The survey showed that from the nine organisations sampled, the number of women in leadership positions was very low compared to that of men.
The survey further revealed that generally women’s participation in the media remained relatively low compared to the male folk as the media in Zambia was highly patriarchal.
She called on all media houses to consider women in leadership positions as they were capable of performing well as their male-folk did.
Ms Mwale said MISA noted with sadness the findings in a survey conducted by the Alchemy Women in leadership that reveal the gaps that still existed in relation with attainment of gender parity in the media sector and that it was time to act.
