COACH George ‘Chicken’ Lwandamina says Guinean side, AS Kaloum will not deter Zesco United’s determination of reaching the finals of the 2015 CAF Orange Champions League competition.
Meanwhile, Power Dynamos coach Tennant Chilumba has predicted a tough game against free-scoring CF Mounana of Gabon when the two sides clash in the first round of the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup in a fortnight.
Zesco will host Kaloum in the first leg tie at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on March 14 with the return leg set for the Stade du 26 Mars in Mali, which is being used as their home ground due to the deadly Ebola virus outbreak in Guinea.
Kaloum completed a double over Sewe Sport of Ivory Coast after winning 1-0 on Sunday, having claimed a surprise 2-1 victory in the first leg in Abidjan last month, to go through 3-1 on aggregate.
Despite that impressive result, Lwandamina remained confident that Kaloum will not be a stumbling block to Zesco’s prospects of advancing further in the competition when the two sides clash.
“What is important is for us to prepare adequately for every game and we will take every game as it comes. We know what we want to achieve and so we will start preparing for the game,” Lwandamina said.
He said Zesco, who sent Swaziland’s Mbabane Swallows packing thanks to a 2-1 aggregate win, will be ready to meet Kaloum in the first round of the tournament.
Lwandamina said yesterday that Zesco was targeting a healthy home victory and that preparations for that match had already started.
“We will plan big for the game as we always do and I think our opponents will not stand in our way,” he said.
Lwandamina said he was hoping striker Winston Kalengo, who was injured during the Swallows game, would recover quickly ahead of this weekend’s Samuel ‘Zoom’ Ndhlovu Charity Shield final against local arch rivals, Power Dynamos.
“Kalengo still has pain in the chest as you know; he was hit in the chest by a Mbabane Swallows player and I am just waiting for our team doctor to advise us. I hope he will get well soon,” he said.
In the Confederation Cup, Chilumba said he knew very little about their opponents CF Mounana but was confident of his team’s chances of progressing to the next round.
The Gabonese club on Sunday beat their hosts Polisi of Zanzibar 3-1 away to advance to the first round 8-1 on aggregate and will host Power in the first leg on March 15 in Libreville.
Chilumba said in Kitwe yesterday that he was expecting another tough game just like preliminary round opponents, Al Khartoum whom they beat 2-1 on aggregate to advance.
“I think we just shouldn’t underrate them. Of course we will keep planning because the game is just two weeks away but we don’t know much about this team. To me it will be another tough team looking at their record they are a high scoring team scoring eight goals conceding just one,” he said.
Mounana is a new team formed in 2006 and have won their only league title to date in the 2011/2012 season. Mounana have finished second in the Gabon league over the last two seasons.
