CHIPOLOPOLO coach Honour Janza is confident that Zambia will defend the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Senior Challenge Cup title in South Africa.
Janza said Zambia was capable of bagging their fifth COSAFA title when the tournament kicks off in May where the Chipolopolo would join the fray in the quarter finals against Group A winners.
He said the Chipolopolo won the 2013 COSAFA title when it was hosted in Zambia and nothing will stop them from defending it.
“I am confident that with adequate preparations the Chipolopolo will defend the title and bring some pride back to the country,” he said.
Janza said hard work, good attitude and character would help the Chipolopolo emerge victorious not only at the COSAFA level but also in other tournaments.
“We might have been eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Equatorial Guinea but we have good players that can win COSAFA,” he said.
According to the draws conducted on Thursday evening in Johannesburg, Zambia will face either face Zimbabwe, Seychelles, Namibia or Mauritius in the quarter finals on May 25.
The winner of the quarter-final clash will meet the victor between 2015 AFCON losing finalists, Ghana or Group B winners.
South Africa will host this year’s COSAFA Cup from May 17-30 in the North-West Province.
Meanwhile, Zambia Sports Fans Association (ZASOFA) chairperson, Peter Makembo said the Chipolopolo should be ready to face any team that would come their way.
Makembo said the players should use the COSAFA to redeem themselves after suffering an early exit from the 2015 AFCON.
“Zambia has good players and they can defend the title but they should not underrate any team because football is dynamic,” he said.
He further said Zambia should use the COSAFA as a warm up for the 2017 AFCON qualifiers and 2018 World Cup qualifiers in June and October, respectively.
