RALLY drivers will for the first time since the 1970’s start getting prize money after each leg of the Zambia Motor Sport Association (ZMSA) national rally championship.
This follows Gomes Haulage’s donation of K120, 000 prize money for the drivers who will emerge victorious in their various categories this season starting with the Madmax National Rally this weekend.
ZMSA technical director Muna Singh said each leg will be allocated K15, 000 from which the overall winner will pocket K4, 000 with the runner-up getting K3, 000, while K2, 000 and K1, 0000 will go to the third and fourth placed respectively.
Muna said the winners in class A, B and C will walk away with K1, 000 each while the winners of the two power stage events will pocket K500 with the highest placed team pocketing K500.
“This has never happened in the history of motorsport. The prize money is aimed at making the rally more competitive and we are also trying to give back to the competitors,” Muna said.
Gomes Haulage representative Balveen Singh said the company decided to make a difference by donating prize money as a way of motivating the competitors to do even more.
Meanwhile, CC Systems joined the bandwagon of sponsors by providing security and communication equipment worth K58, 000 while Kelvin Exhaust will provide equipment for scruteneering worth K10, 000.
The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has authorised the closure of Freedom Way in the central business district to accommodate the Super Special Stage on Saturday starting at 15: 00hours to 18:00 hours.
