Beautifully Healthy LogoHello I hope you are doing well. I hope you all enjoyed your Valentine’s Day.
This week we look at how to clean your makeup tools.
Not cleaning your makeup tools leads to build up which can lead to your skin breaking out or you getting a very nasty bacterial infection, worse if anything goes into your eyes you could get blind.
Have I scared you enough? Good lets warm some water up and get to cleaning.
To clean make up sponges (puff) , run them under warm water and then wash with a mild shampoo (I recommend baby shampoo, it’s great for makeup removal), rinse the sponge thoroughly and then dry it on a clean towel or hang it on the line. You need to wash them every week or have spare ones.
According to makeup.com there is a process to cleaning your makeup brushes that you did not know about.
1. Rinse: Rinse the bristles always with water streaming down–you want to avoid running water directly into the base of the brush, which can weaken the glue and shorten the lifespan of your brush.
2. Cleanse: Work a small amount of gentle shampoo (we prefer to use baby shampoo) into the bristles. Lather, rinse, and repeat until the water runs clear.
3. Disinfect: Now that your brushes are clean, it’s time to disinfect. Mix a solution of 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar in a shallow bowl. Swoosh the brush around in the bowl for a minute or two (again, trying not to submerge it fully). Rinse with fresh water.
4. Dry: Reshape the bristles and lay clean brushes flat on a towel overnight to dry.
5. Repeat: Clean your brushes every other week to keep the germs away from your makeup and off your skin.”
It looks like quite a procedure until you think about how fragile and in need of constant TLC your skin is in.
I personally hate hair on my hairbrush especially if it’s not my hair, I am totally obsessed with cleaning my combs.
To clean them first remove all the hair and if it’s hard to remove use a tooth or a disposable fork, then soak in a bowl with water with clarifying shampoo.
If your brush is made of plastic, soak it for three to five minutes and if its fabric head then just dip it in water.
Take an old toothbrush (or a new one if you can afford it and scrub) then rinse and lay the brush down on a towel to dry overnight.
Do this every two weeks to a month.
Makeup.com advises how you must clean your metal tools.
“For metal tools like tweezers, eyelash curlers, eyebrow trimmers, cuticle nippers, and nail clippers, wash them down using water and antibacterial soap. Pat dry with a clean towel.”
Its important to properly sanitize metal after using it so always wipe it down with an alcohol soaked cotton ball (methylated spirit works quite well). Let it dry for a few minutes.
Beauty tools made of metal should be cleaned after every use or after every tool weeks, store them in a clean container or bag.
