KambwiliBy JAMES KUNDA –

THE Government has placed high premium on developing radio as a medium for taking information closer to the people, Information and Broadcasting Services Minister Chishimba has said.
Mr Kambwili said this move had provided opportunities to communities not only to access information on various issues, but also to own radio stations.
The Chief Government spokesperson said this ahead of the World Radio Day, which falls today and will be commemorated under the theme “Youth and Radio”.
“Zambia now has over 70 radio stations on air countrywide, a result of the favourable environment Government has, and continues to put in place, for the growth of the broadcasting industry”.
“It is for this reason that Government is proud to be associated with the commemoration of this year’s World Radio Day whose ultimate goal is to increase the level of participation of young people in radio, not just as listeners but as producers of content,” Mr Kambwili said.
He said Government was through the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) installing FM transmitters to enhance radio reception country-wide.
Mr Kambwili said the theme of the event was not only timely but also in tandem with Government’s agenda to empower youths with information so that they participate effectively in the governance and development of the country.
Mr Kambwili urged stakeholders and the public at large to deepen their interest and investment in radio as an important medium for social inclusion, unity and development.
“I, however, hasten to call on all radio stations country-wide to aspire for the highest level of ethical and professional standard in carrying out their work of informing, educating and entertaining the public,” he said.
