ZAMBIA has been picked to be among the 45 countries DHL Africa is helping popularise the sport of rugby and raise awareness ahead of the 2015 Rugby World Cup (RWC) to be held in England.
A team, called Africa As One, sponsored by DHL arrived in Zambia, while continuing on their grand and ambitious journey through 45 African countries, which started in Cape Town in October 2014 and is set to end in London in September.
Forming part of the build up to RWC 2015 in England, the DHL Africa as One tour will see the team pass a single rugby ball from hand to hand while introducing the African continent to the game of Rugby.
DHL Express Zambia country manager Nomsa Mumba said at a media briefing that a seven-strong team left Burundi last week and will be engaging in various rugby and corporate responsibility activities during their stay in the country.
“This journey in itself is a test of endurance and commitment, with the team having to face challenges from all quarters, including terrain, security, health and safety. The journey has seen us delivering the game of rugby and what it represents, across Africa,” she said.
Mumba said what was importantly, especially on a continent synonymous with the game of soccer, was to unearth a keen interest in the global sport of rugby.
“This tour is not just about rugby, it is about showcasing Africa to the rest of the world in all her beauty. We are delighted to share our beautiful country and all it has to offer, with the rest of the world,” says Mumba.
The crew and team at DHL Express Zambia will also be entertaining their top customers and staff’ families to a fun rugby event to promote the sport and the Africa As One journey.
