CONSTRUCTION of 3,000 new housing units for security personnel countrywide is expected to commence this year, Home Affairs Minister Davis Mwila has said.
Mr Mwila said in an interview yesterday that this would be under phase one of the project which is aimed at constructing 10,000 houses for police and prisons officers countrywide.
“The programme to construct houses for security personnel countrywide is on course and it is hoped that by June this year, construction of 3,000 houses under phase one of the project will have commenced,” Mr Mwila said.
Meanwhile, Mr Mwila said part of his core agenda, following his appointment to the Ministry of Home Affairs, is to facilitate the construction of new milling plants countrywide by the Zambia Prisons Service (ZPS).
“ZPS and Food Reserve Agency (FRA) are two Government institutions directly involved in maize farming and marketing.
“We want ZPS to expand its milling plants countrywide to process not only the maize that it grows but also that which is bought by FRA, so that our people can start buying mealie meal at a much lower price,” he said.
Mr Mwila said as Home Affairs minister, he had a duty to ensure that law and order are maintained.
“It is for this reason that I have directed police to be vigilant and ensure that perpetrators of any form of violence are brought to book,” he said.
