MORE than 30 riders will take part in the first round of the national motocross championship that revs off on Saturday at Leopards Hill Moto-Park in Lusaka.
Zambia Motor Sport Association (ZMSA) president Marco Comana said in an interview yesterday that he was expecting an exciting 2015 national motocross season starting with the first round this weekend.
Comana said the national championship will have six rounds that will be taking place in Lusaka, Ndola and Kitwe.
He said the ZMSA will this year target bringing in young riders in a bid to continue growing the sport and paid tribute to Kitwe for producing young and talented riders, who performed well at the Africa Motocross Championship hosted by Zambia last year.
That tournament saw Zambia finish third behind champions South Africa and runners up Zimbabwe.
“We need to have young riders coming on board for the growth of the sport, last year we finished third in the Africa Championship but we would have done better if we had more young riders. Look at South Africa, they always emerge victories because they have young riders,” he said.
Comana said he was impressed with Kitwe-based rider Brodly Lionnet, who was crowned best rider despite the Team Zambia finishing third, and that he was looking forward to this year’s Africa Championship that will be hosted by Botswana in August.
