CHAVUMA residents living on the West Bank of the Zambezi have been cut off from the rest of the district because of flooding of the river which has caused closure of the pontoon.
The closure of the pontoon has ultimately cut the existing link for people to access either side of the river bank.
Chavuma District Commissioner Lawrence Kayumbu said in an interview yesterday.
Mr Kayumbu said there would be no crossing of people to and from either side of the river bank for the next six months.
He said the pontoon was closed last week on Thursday when the water table in the Zambezi River rose to extreme levels.
“Communication between East and West Bank will now be a challenge and so we don’t expect to see people living on the other side of the river until after six months when we expect the water levels to subside,” Mr Kayumbu said.
The district commissioner has since advised residents against risking their lives by crossing the crocodile-infested Zambezi River using dug-out canoes.
