By JAMES KUNDA –
THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has called for an immediate reduction in the price of consumer goods and services owing to the recent decrease in the cost of fuel.
ZACA executive director Samuel Simutunda said in an interview yesterday that the decrease in fuel prices should translate into the reduction of goods and services to benefit ordinary consumers.
“Its our expectation that the price of all consumer goods and services will reduce now that the price of fuel on the local market has dropped by a more significant margin,” Mr Simutunda said.
Mr Simutunda particularly called on millers and transporters to reduce the cost of mealie-meal and bus fares on local routes respectively.
Meanwhile, the Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) will on Monday next week convene a meeting to discuss the prospect of reducing the cost of mealie-meal in light of the fuel price reduction.
MAZ president Allan Sakala said in a separate interview yesterday that he would meet members of his association to discuss how the price of the commodity could be lowered further.
The average price of a 25 kilogramme bag of breakfast mealie meal currently stands at K68 after plummeting from a high of K80 towards the end of last year.
