PATRIOTIC Front (PF) candidate Edgar Lungu has taken an early lead in Tuesday’s Presidential election after polling 83,644 votes in 12 of the 150 constituencies that were officially announced by the Electoral Commission of Zambia.
Mr Lungu is followed by opposition United Party for National Developent (UPND) leader who has polled 44,147 votes from the 12 constituencies according to official results.
The ECZ released results from 12 constituencies before commission chairperson Irene Mambilima announced the suspension of announcing results until voting closed in 51 polling stations that started voting late.
MMD’s Nevers Mumba was third with 1,982 votes while the only female candidate in the race Edith Nawakwi of the Forum for Democracy and Democracy has 1,013 with FDA leader Ludwig Sondashi trailing at 127.
According to results displayed at the ECZ results centre at the Mulungushi Conference Centre, Mr Lungu polled 3,332 in Feira Constituency while Mr Hichilema had 751 votes with UNIP in third with 51. MMD’s Nevers Mumba polled 29 votes while the remaining candidates had each less than 10.
In Livingstone Central, Mr Hichilema was a run-away winner with 19,125 votes followed by Mr Lungu with 8,352 while MMD managed to get only 653 with Dan Pule at the tail end with just 12 votes.
From Chawama constituency where Mr Lungu votes from, the PF candidate polled 13, 469 while Mr Hichilema had 6, 261.
In Mwense constituency in Luapula Province, Mr Lungu polled 5,340 votes followed by his closest rival Mr Hichilema with 1,055. The MMD polled 69 with Tilyenji Kaunda of UNIP amassing 25 votes.
In Mambilima constituency Mr Lungu received 3,714 with Mr Hichilema amassing 568 while the MMD had a paltry 120 votes with Tilyenji Kaunda in third position with 17. Forum for Democratic Alternative (FDA) leader Ludwig Sondashi and Peter Sinkamba of the Green Party were on the tail with just three votes apiece.
In Kawambwa, Mr Lungu amassed 5,133 ballots while Mr Hichilema had 374 closely followed by Dr Mumba with 342.
The PF candidate also enjoyed a big margin in Wusakile Constituency in Kitwe where he polled 11,551 followed by Mr Hichilema with 1,969. Dr Mumba had 95 while Dr Sondashi was at the bottom with just 11 votes.
The situation was similar in Kamfinsa Constituency where Mr Lungu got 8,983 votes followed by Mr Hichilema with 2,282 votes with MMD polling just 106 votes. Mr Lungu polled 8,439 in Kantanshi Constituency while his closest rival Mr Hichilema got 1,615.
Results obtained by the Times of Zambia showed Mr Lungu with a commanding lead in Constituencies in Eastern, Lusaka, Luapula, Northern and Copperbelt Provinces with the PF candidate behind Mr Hichilema in Southern, Western and North-Western Provinces where the UPND won with huge margins.
In Chipangali Constituency in Eastern Province, Mr Lungu got 4,673 followed by Mr Hichilema with 1,750 votes while Mr Kaunda and FDD’s Edith Nawakwi polled 119 and 114, respectively.

In Matero constituency in Lusaka, Mr Lungu polled three times as much as Mr Hicilema’s votes after polling 28,056 against 9,127 for Mr Hichilema. The margin was equally wide in Munali where the PF candidate polled 27,296 followed by Mr Hichilema’s 14,449.
In Lupososhi, Mr Lungu polled 6,592 from 42 of the 52 polling stations followed by Mr Hichilema at 962 while the MMD was third with 78.
In Sinda, the UPND Constituency Mr Hichilema polled 3,142 followed by Mr Lungu who received 2,509 with Ms Nawakwi getting 563 in third position.
In Chikankata Constituency Mr Hichilema polled 12,456 while Mr Lungu had 471 votes with MMD only.
Mr Lungu scooped both the Kabwe Central and Bwacha constituencies after polling a combined total of 19,945 against his closet rival Hakainde Hichilema of UPND who got 7,639.
Returning officer for Kabwe Central Rabeka Banda said Mr Lungu polled 11,763 followed by Mr Hichilema who got 4,957, MMD’s Nevers Mumba 178, Ms Edith Nawakwi 151, Tiyenji Kaunda 60 while Fourth Revolution’s Eric Chanda got 28.
Dan Pule of CDP’s polled 36, Heritage Party’s Godfrey Miyamda got 47, Elias Chipimo of NAREP polled 45, Ludwig Sondashi of FDA got 15 and 12 for Green Party’s Peter Sinkamba while 161 votes were rejected.
Returning officer for Bwacha constituency, Miyoba Chimuka announced that Mr Lungu got 8,182 followed by Mr Hichilema who got 2,682, Mumba polled 209, Ms Nawakwi 82, Mr Kaunda 61, Mr Chanda 48, Pule 37, General Miyanda 26, Mr Chipimo 24, Dr Sondashi 12 and Mr Sinkamba 8.
In Mkaika constituency, Mr Lungu managed 4,051 votes with his rival Mr Hichilema managing 2,285 votes, Mr Miyanda got 134 votes, Mr Chanda polled 120 votes, Ms Nawakwi managed 117 votes and Dr Pule polled 115 votes.
In Milanzi constituency of Katete District, Mr Lungu got 3, 441 vote, Mr Hichilema got 1,471 votes, Mr Chanda received 196 votes, Ms Nawakwi got 128 votes, Mr Kaunda got 122 votes, Mr Miyanda polled 84 votes, Dr Pule managed 82 votes, Mr Chipimo got 64 votes, Dr Mumba managed 60 votes, Dr Sondashi got 39 votes and Mr Sinkamba only managing 18 votes.
In Chipata Central Constituency, Mr Lungu amassed 10,883 votes while Mr Hichilema only managed 3, 228 votes. Edith Nawakwi of Forum got 210 votes, Mr Kaunda received 111 votes, Dr Mumba 76 votes with Godfrey Miyanda and Elias Chipimo had 45 and 40 votes respectively.
Mr Chanda got 38 votes, Dr Pule got 36 votes with Dr Sondashi managing only 16 votes and Peter Sinkamba nine votes.
In Luangeni constituency, Mr Lungu polled 5,151 votes, Mr Hichilema polled 1,716 votes, Dr Mumba received 111 votes, Mr Kaunda got 167 votes,Mr Miyanda 56 votes, Ms Nawakwi got 51 votes, Dr Pule 41 votes, Mr Chipimo 50 votes, Dr Sondashi 29 votes, Mr Sinkamba got 8 votes and Mr Chanda 8 votes.
Mr Lungu recorded 8, 729 votes in Lundazi Central constituency, with Mr Hichilema getting 2,972 votes. Ms Nawakwi managed 375 votes, Mr Chanda got 339 votes, Mr Kaunda got 269 votes, Mr Miyanda only managed 116 votes with Dr Mumba who only managed 104 votes.
Mr Hichilema scooped Mongu Central polling 11,483 votes beating Mr Lungu who got 1,959 votes. Returning officer Duncan Chipulu announced the results.
Mr Lungu polled 11, 750 votes in Chingola constituency on the Copperbelt against 5,846 votes for Mr Hichilema.
In Nchanga constituency Mr Lungu polled 11, 388 votes while Mr Hichilema got 2,666 votes, Ms Nawakwi 188 votes and Dr Mumba got 90 votes.
In Kalulushi Mr Lungu received 11, 371 while Mr Hichilema got 4,040 votes.
Kalulushi District Electoral Officer, Shame Samalela, announced the results at Kalulushi Secondary School.
In Kitwe, Mr Lungu received 15 214 in Chimwemwe constituency while Mr Hichilema received 3 499.
Mr Lungu got 11, 551 votes in Wusakile while Mr Hichilema got 1, 905. The situation was similar in Kwacha Constituency where the PF candidate polled 14, 940 and 4, 027 went to Mr Hichilema.
In Chililabombwe 10, 126 people voted for Mr Lungu while Mr Hichilema received 2, 780.
Mr Lungu also scooped all the four constituencies in Ndola district.
In Ndola Central constituency, Mr Lungu polled 12, 620 votes while his closest rival, Mr Hichilema polled 4, 662 votes.
In Bwana Mkubwa Constituency, Mr Lungu polled 11, 294 votes, while Mr Hichilema polled 3, 038 votes.
In Kabushi constituency, Mr Lungu polled 12,475 votes while Mr Hichilema polled 2,762 votes and in Chifubu Constituency, Mr Lungu polled 11, 817 against Mr Hichilema’s 3,422.
By press time yesterday, figures from four polling stations in Mpongwe had not yet been transmitted to the totaling centre.
Muyambe, Mushive, Kapili and Munkoyo polling stations are located far from the totaling centre but ECZ organised a chopper to ferry the ballots to the counting hub.
From the 44 polling stations that had already submitted results in Mpongwe, Mr Hichilema polled a total of 3,587 seconded by Mr Lungu who polled 2, 547 votes.
Mpongwe has a total of 34,642 registered voters from 48 polling stations.
Meanwhile, in Luanshya central constituency Mr Lungu emerged victorious with 9,785 votes against Mr Hichilema’s 3,145 votes while in Mufulira, the PF candidate polled 6,755 votes while Mr Hichilema polled 1,690 votes.
In Solwezi Central, Mr Hichilema polled 14, 737, while the PF had 4, 219. In Ikelenge, UPND had 6, 515 and the PF had 537.
