TWO men have been arrested in Choma in connection with the attack on officials from the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) at one of the polling stations on Tuesday night.
Some people attacked the ECZ officers and some observers who had gathered at Sibanyati Basic School polling station located about 16 kilometres from Choma town.
As presiding officer Honesty Mushutila was about to announce the results around 20:30 hours, some people besieged the school and started throwing stones and other missiles.
Mr Mushutila and his team took refuge under some tables and desks inside the classroom where the voting exercise took place while some women shouted for help.
One of the electoral officers, Inonge Chamwanga, was found unconscious after she collapsed during the incident.
Some police officers in riot gear rushed to the scene and managed to arrest two men.
A check at the school, found several classroom windows smashed, with rocks.
Mr Mushutila told journalists that some people started throwing stones when he was about to officially announce the results and he did not know the reasons for their behaviour.
“People just started throwing stones and other objects inside the classroom where I was supposed to announce the results, and we are lucky nobody was injured,” he said.
Southern Province police chief, Mary Chikwanda, confirmed the incident but could not disclose the identities of the two suspects.
