ZAMBIA’S biking legend, David Reeve says he may not take part in the Dakar Rally again.
Reeve achieved his lifelong dream of not only competing in the world’s toughest race but also finishing the Dakar Rally, a feat that came after his last two attempts ended in injury.
“It was all magnificent but I am unsure of coming back next year. It’s difficult to find sponsors in Zambia and being a farmer doesn’t make it any easier,” he said.
Reeve told the Dakar Rally Magazine that he enjoyed the 2015 edition especially having gone the distance and enjoying some rare scenery that took him through the dunes, desert, mountains and some wet surfaces.
The prominent Mazabuka farmer, whose mainstay crop is coffee, said taking part in the Dakar Rally in the last three years meant he has not been around at crucial stages of coffee production.
Reeve, who finished the race in 32nd position having started in position 103 to remain the only Zambian to have taken part in this gruesome race, was full of praise for his sponsors and his team that stood by him throughout the race.
“If I could just send a message to all the young up-and-coming sportsmen, is that you must follow your heart, never give up on living a dream. With the will, determination, blood, sweat and tears, you can get anything done. If a small country town redneck farmer can do it, so can you,” he said.
Reeve joked that as he was going to rest having overcome his great wish but that he would start planning on overcoming Mount Everest.
