THIRTEEN families in Mkushi District have been left in the cold after roofs of their houses were blown off, following strong winds and a heavy downpour at the weekend.
Mkushi District Commissioner, Luke Mwamba, confirmed that 13 houses in Farmers Training College (FTC) Township have had their roofs blown off and Mulundu Primary School has also been affected.
Mr Mwamba said the district has been experiencing heavy downpours in the past few days which have caused damage in the area.
“I can confirm that 13 families in FTC Compound have been left in the cold and Mulundu Primary School also had its roof completely blown off,” Mr Mwamba said.
Mr Mwamba has described the situation as a disaster and has since engaged the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to assess the extent of the damage in the district
He said the families have had their properties and food stuffs destroyed, as the items got submerged in the rain water.
Mr Mwamba has urged the residents to stay calm as the DMMU was doing everything possible to assist the affected families.
He said the affected families would be given tents to stay in as the situation is been addressed, while the school would not reopen next week.
Mr Mwamba was however grateful that no life had been lost when the tragedy happened on Saturday even though people were in their houses at the time.
