RESIDENTS of Racecourse Township in Kitwe on Christmas Day yet again ran amok stoning vehicles after a cyclist was run over by a vehicle.
This is the second time in one week that the residents in the area are protesting over a road traffic accident involving a pedestrian.
The residents, who were incensed by lack of speed humps on the newly constructed Racecourse Road, took to stoning vehicles and blocked the road with logs after a vehicle hit a cyclist who died on the spot.
Copperbelt Police chief Joyce Kasosa said the incident happened around 19:30 hours.
Ms Kasosa named the cyclist as Amos Chibwe whose age and residential address was not given.
She said the man was hit by a Toyota VVTI registration number ABV 7277 which was being driven by Edwin Nyambe of Riverside residential area.
“The deceased sustained a deep cut on the head, bruised chest and fractured left arm and leg and he died on the spot,” she said.
Ms Kasosa said residents reacted angrily by stoning vehicles and blocking the road with logs and stones.
She said irate residents attempted to burn the vehicle but were only prevented by the Police who quickly moved in and fired teargas to disperse the unruly crowd.
Ms Kasosa appealed to residents to desist from taking the law into their own hands each time they were aggrieved by something including an accident.
A week ago, residents in Racecourse stoned vehicles after a mini-bus hit and killed a pedestrian.
