ZESCO United striker Winston Kalengo has backed his club to be strong contenders for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) 2015 Champions League title.
Kalengo, who inspired his side to claiming the 2014 league title and the Barclays Cup, believes his side had the potential to better that record.
Zesco featured in the CAF Champions League three times, bowing out in the round of 32 in 2008 before making history a year later by becoming the first Zambian club to reach the group stage but in 2011 got eliminated in the round of 16.
The club’s 2014 Player-of-the-Year said in an interview that Zesco is one of the formidable sides in the continental championship.
“We have a very strong team at the moment and everyone is excited to be playing in the CAF Champions League next year. With the current crop of players, nothing will stop us from achieving our target,” he said.
Kalengo said the target set for the club by the Zesco Limited managing director Cyprian Chitundu of winning the continental title was achievable with hard work.
He said the team had experience of what to expect in the CAF competitions having participated in the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup.
Kalengo said the current Zesco squad was capable of meeting any opponent in the competition and produce positive results.?He has, therefore, called for hard work among his team mates as it was crucial to the team’s preparations for the continental championship and the 2015 season.
“We just need to maintain the same spirit that made us win the league and the Barclays cup, otherwise we are capable of winning the continental trophy and no one should write us off,” he said.
