By XAVIER MANCHISHI –
THE Patriotic Front (PF) central committee has warned that it will expel Acting President Guy Scott if he does not withdraw the letter he wrote to acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda instructing her not to receive Edgar Lungu’s nomination.
Central committee members Harry Kalaba, Nkandu Luo, Jean Kapata and Davies Mwila said in a walk-in interview in Lusaka yesterday that the letter was an act of interference with the Judiciary.
Mr Kalaba said if Dr Scott did not withdraw the letter, the central committee would have no choice but to expel him from the party.
“Dr Scott has no authority to instruct the Judiciary on what to do. He should desist from the habit of exposing his traits,” he said.
Ms Kapata said the actions of Dr Scott were testimony of what late President Michael Sata always said jokingly that Dr Scott was a confused man.
She added that Dr Scott was Acting President because he was sponsored into Government by the PF but that his recent actions were not only divisive but also meant to destroy the party.
“It is barely 90 days since our beloved President died, and the man who took over from him is acting in a manner that is not suitable,” she said.
Professor Luo said Dr Scott’s behavior had vindicated Mr Sata who never left him to act each time he travelled out of the country.
“Ever since he started acting he has been abusing his authority by making unilateral decisions. The best for Guy Scott to save his face is to resign,” she charged.
Mr Mwila said a central committee meeting scheduled for last night was expected to take action over Dr Scott in a bid to save the party.
But Dr Scott explained in a separate interview that he wrote the letter in his capacity as Acting Republican President to the Acting Chief Justice as the returning officer.
He said the letter was not meant to bar Mr Lungu from filling in his nomination on Saturday.
“I merely informed Madam Chibesakunda to be aware of the court cases challenging the presidency, this is being straightforward and that is what should be done,” he said.
Dr Scott said people should not misinterpret his letter, which was simple and straight forward and that it was also the reason he had not joined Mr
Lungu in his campaigns because of the active court processes.
Asked if he would attend the central committee meeting, Dr Scott said he would not because he believed in the constitution and not shortcuts.
