By SANDRA MWILA –
THE first-ever sports summer camp gets underway at the International School of Lusaka tomorrow targeting kids between the ages of seven and 12.
Sporting Wave Limited co-founder director Stephanie Devalia said in a statement yesterday that all was set for the four-day summer camp that will see kids trained in various sports disciplines.
Stephanie said that participants are expected to pay K850 for the camp that will start on December 15 to 19 and will receive professional instruction in swimming, football, rugby, basketball, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, dance, boxing and judo.
“We have just finished the interviews for the sports camp counsellors and successful candidates will undergo leadership and camp training. The following weekend all counsellors will also be trained and certified by the Zambia Red Cross Society in First Aid and CPR,” she said.
Aditya Devalia, who is also a co-founding director, said he has realised that there are not enough such community-based opportunities available in Zambia and that was why they thought of the training camp.
“We wanted to create something that would be accessible to all children, and would reach beyond traditional school events.  It gives young people an opportunity to make new friends and have access to professional instruction in a wide variety of sports.
“We have already had much success with the Leopard’s Hill Football League, and have realised that Zambia is waiting for more such opportunities.  For the camp, we have partnered with Magic Advertising and Promotions Limited, as well as the International School of Lusaka to make this event as exciting and successful as possible,” he said.
Aditya said Sporting Wave Limited will be training young Zambian leaders in sport specific rules, as well as CPR and First Aid.
He said this kind of early leadership experience can be life-changing and develop management skills in young people that are sought after by employers the world over.
