THE Zambia Cricket Union (ZCU) has embarked on a nationwide expansion programme to introduce the sport to all corners of Zambia and has now targeted 15 schools in the Southern Province.
ZCU president Reuben Chama said in an interview yesterday that the union was targeting primary and high schools in the province as a way of enticing pupils to take part in the sport and increase participation levels among the youths.
Chama said ZCU had budgeted about K50,000 for its expansion project in the Southern Province.
He stated that the union was also donating various cricket equipments to schools to help strengthen the sport’s structure at grassroot level.
“We are targeting 15 schools and we want to make sure that we cover all provinces in Zambia before the end of next year,” Chama said. He said ZCU had so far captured North-Western, Northern and Eastern provinces and was now spreading cricket to the south. Chama said the union wanted to see more youths across the nation playing cricket and that teachers will be vital in luring the pupils to the sport. He said the sports equipments that include bats, balls, helmets, and gloves among others will help pupils have access to better facilities without any hindrances. Chama expressed happiness with the positive response that the union had been getting from people in the new areas where the sport was being introduced.
