THE Poultry Association of Zambia (PAZ) has said chicken and other poultry products have become cheaper because of the efficiency in the value chain.
PAZ national chairperson Rhodney Sisala said now chicken accounts for about 43 per cent of the meat consumption in the country.
“I wish to commend the various players in the poultry value chain for their efficient operation which has led to poultry meat becoming much cheaper than beef, pork, lamb, mutton and fish.
“It is estimated that chicken now accounts for about 43 per cent of all meat consumption, followed by beef at about 40 per cent,” Mr Sisala said at the SADC Poultry Liaison Forum meeting which was held in Lusaka.
Mr Sisala said the challenges experienced in beef and pork sector have led to Zambia consuming more chicken meat than other meats.
He urged players in the poultry value chain to continue deploying modern, efficient and effective farming practices to achieve productivity and low incidences of disease outbreaks.
The industry has been growing between 10 to 15 per cent per annum in years along the value chain and expanding operations with new players in the sector.
During the meeting, SADC countries discussed technical and trade related matters and shared issue relating to the poultry industry so that members may benefit from the information.
