By FELIX MALUNGA –
THE Zambia Golf Union (ZGU) has deferred its annual general meeting which was scheduled for this weekend in Kabwe to December 7.
ZGU honorary secretary, Kelly Munsaka said the council meeting had been postponed due to some unforeseeable shortcomings.
Munsaka said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that even the season-closing Levy Mwanawasa President’s Cup, which was slated for tomorrow at Kabwe Golf Club, had also been pushed to December 6.
He, however, said ZGU expected a fullhouse next weekend in Kabwe for the President’s Cup and the council meeting.
Munsaka said the response for the President’s Cup was overwhelming as a total of 98 players were expected to compete for honours.
And SHAMAOMA MUSONDA reports that Ndola golfer Dayne Moore had a woeful start to the R1.5 million-rich Lion of Africa Cape Town Open Championship at the Royal Cape Golf Club in South Africa, posting a four-over-par 76 on day one of the four-day tournament.
While Moore was having a poor run, his country mate Madalitso Muthiya had a slightly better showing, shooting two-over-par 74 with the scorecard of two birdies littered with four bogeys.
For Moore, who had to go through a qualifier to make this tournament draw, the Lion of Africa Cape Town Open handed him a rough beginning as he bogeyed the fourth and sixth holes which left him with a challenge of chasing the game already.
Though he recovered a shot on the seventh, holes 10 and 11 proved to be ‘banana skins’ for him as he dropped a shot on each of the two holes and repeated the feat on the 16th and 17th but sandwiched that with a birdie on the 13th.
This gave him a four over par first round score and with the leaders Lyle Rowe and Hennie Otto on six-under-par 66,
Moore will have to dig deep to make the cut today for this lucrative tournament.
While Moore was having trouble with the winds on one end, Muthiya was trying hard to keep the ball in the fairway and after starting from the back nine, birdied on the 11th but dropped that shot on the 14th.
Into the front nine, he started with a birdie on the first hole but dropped three strokes on the next five holes before playing par on the rest of the holes.
