THE Government has released K128 million to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for preparations for the presidential election scheduled for January20, 2015.
The estimate of requirements submitted by the ECZ to the Treasury is K344 Million.
Acting Secretary to the Treasury Pamela Kabamba said the disbursement of the K128 million was made following the announcement of the election date by Acting President Guy Scott.
“The Treasury wishes to assure the nation that resources will be provided to the ECZ as and when required so that there are no unnecessary financial glitches in preparing for this important national event,” Ms Kabamba said.
She said the Treasury had been in constant liaison with the ECZ to ensure that the Government was on top of things in meeting the requirements for smooth preparation of the presidential election.
In a statement released by Ministry of Finance public relations officer Chileshe Kandeta, Ms Kabamba said the Treasury was also on high alert in case of economic stress from internal and external shocks.
“I also take this opportunity to reassure the nation that the Treasury is on high alert and has continued to keep vigil on economic fundamentals to ensure that any stress arising from internal and external shocks in the international economic system is monitored and handled effectively,” said Ms Kabamba added.
