ZAMBIAN teams have been forced to pull out from taking part in the 2014 Africa Hockey Club Championship that starts this weekend in Zimbabwe due to lack of sponsorship.
Zambia Hockey Association (ZHA) coordinator Thomas Mumba said in an interview yesterday that Lusaka Sharks boys and girls teams will not participate in the tournament after the association failed to raise K62, 000 needed for the outing.
Mumba said the association decided to pull out of the championship after managing to raise K29, 000 which was not enough to send a team for the championship and that raising the remaining balance has proved difficult.
The 2014 Africa Hockey Club Championship will run from November 22 to 30 and has attracted 10 countries.
“It will be difficult for us to raise the remaining K33, 000 with barely two days before the start of the tournament. It is unfortunate that the teams had to pull out when they had the potential of winning a medal,” he said.
Mumba said the players are devastated with the outcome especially that they were committed to training for over a month.
