THE Golden Jubilee – Michael Chilufya Sata express train was yesterday launched with the Government pledging to continue with the vision of President Sata in improving the transport sector in Zambia.
Launching the train in Lusaka, Transport and Communications Minister Yamfwa Mukanga said President Sata’s vision was to improve the transport sector by not only ensuring that roads were constructed but also that the Zambia Railways was revamped.
The Golden Jubilee – Michael Chilufya Sata express train would provide a regular passenger train service between Livingstone and Kitwe.
Mr Mukanga reiterated that the Government would continue to invest into the Zambia Railways Limited (ZRL) because it was determined to improve the social welfare of Zambians.
First lady Christine Kaseba said the family was humbled by the decision to name the passenger train after the late President.
Speaking through her daughter Mwelwa, Dr Kaseba said President Sata’s vision in the transport sector could only be released in a peaceful atmosphere.
ZRL Board chairperson Davies Chama said the vision of President Sata for the institution was becoming a reality.
Mr Chama said that the board and management would continue honouring President Sata by working hard.
He also called on the Government to continue investing in ZRL in an effort to decongest the road sector in the country.
ZRL chief executive officer Muyenga Attanga said the institution would continue implementing Government programmes.
Professor Attanga thanked the minister for providing leadership in implementing Government programmes.
And ZRL union representative Nathan Zulu paid tribute to President Sata for repossessing the institution in September 2012.
