LUSAKA Province Chess Association (LPCA) vice-chairperson Kiddy Mukwaya has challenged his boss Linus Katebe for the position of chairperson ahead of next month’s elections.
Meanwhile, up to 14 candidates will jostle for the nine positions in the committee after close of nominations at the weekend.
The top post will see Mukwaya being the only candidate to challenge Katebe at the elections set for December 7 at the Olympics Youth Development Centre (OYDC) in Lusaka.
Four candidates have gone through unopposed and this includes the position of vice-chairperson which has been vacated by Mukwaya.
Mukwaya, who was the campaign manager for Lewis Ncube on his way to be elected African Chess Union (ACU) president in Norway earlier this year, believes he will take the game to school and other districts of Lusaka Province.??
“I intend to make sure more schools play chess, have more clubs and also spread chess to other districts like Chilanga, Kafue and Chongwe among others. It’s sad that at the moment chess is only played in Lusaka,” he said.?
Incumbent treasurer Andrew Kayonde will go through unopposed for the position of vice-chairperson while Maybin Chinama has also scooped the key position of secretary general unchallenged.?
Others going through unopposed are tournament director which has been retained by Cliff Mulenga with his deputy Leonard Sampa also retaining his post unopposed.?
