A thirty-six-year-old man of Sinazongwe has been fined k100 for unlawful possession of ammunition when poaching for ivory and game meat in kazungula recently.
Winter Simandondo of Sitwala Village in Sinazongwe was slapped with the fine by the Livingstone Magistrates Court on November 6, 2014 and faces a four month jail term should he default the condition.
Zambia Wildlife Authority (zawa) communications and public relations officer Readith Muliyunda said in a statement yesterday that Simandondo was among the eight suspects that zawa arrested for being in possession of ivory and game meat while armed with an ak47 rifle and 0.375 rounds of ammunition.
“Other convicts; Tebuho Simasiku, 30, John Nkumane, 59, both of Luhonono Village in Kazungula were fined k200 each, for being in possession of Government trophy without a permit,” she said.
Ms Muliyunda said the others, Abraham Sikasole, also of Luhonono and Casper Mbwayukira of Muteni Village were each sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour for the same offence.
Ms Muliyunda said a female juvenile of Luhonono Village, was discharged of the offence, while two others, among them Risen Longwani a Zimbabwean are still appearing in court.
On Thursday last week, zawa carried out a sweep in and around Mandea area of Kazungula where they arrested the suspects.
