ZAMBIA Under-20 coach, Maybin Gunduzani has urged boxers, especially those who were left out in the initial provisional team, to prove their worth been picked for the national team for the Africa Youth Games.
Zambia Amateur Boxing Federation (ZABF) at the weekend suspended the proposed training camp for the national under-20 and senior teams owing to inactivity by the boxers in the past six months.
ZABF president Thomas Chileshe said his executive found it fit to postpone the camping and call for fresh trials because a lot would have happened in the past months ranging from the boxers losing fitness levels while those that were left out would have gained form.
And Gunduzani agreed with the ZABF executive, saying the decision to postpone the camping and hold fresh trials would also broaden the selection base so that Zambia could have a strong team at the Africa Youth Games to be held in Botswana in May.
“For now, the boxers that were initially called to camp will continue training in their respective clubs but shall be monitoring them. Let me also call upon those that did not make the first team to prove themselves when trials are held because we want to pick the best boxers to represent and win the country medals,” he said.
Gunduzani said no boxer was assured of a place as everyone had to prove their worth before been named in the final team.
