TRIVIA – Chris Mtonga was a utility footballer who during his illustrious career played in three different positions. Mtonga started his football career as a striker at Green Buffaloes but was converted into a defensive midfielder by Fred Mwila at Power Dynamos.
While still at Buffaloes, he played alongside the late Obby Kapita and Francis Kajiya among several others.
Because of the silky skills he exhibited on the pitch, Mwila nicknamed him ‘French Player’ at Power as he likened his style of play to French football. At Power, he rubbed shoulders with Peter Kaumba and late Alex Chola.
When he joined Ndola United in 1983, Mtonga was again turned into a defender and he went on to win back-to-back Most Consistent Player accolades.
After retiring, Mtonga took up coaching and managed Ndola United and helped the team win promotion to the Premier Division League. He later coached Zesco United with current Chipolopolo coach, Honour Janza being his team captain.
With the Zambia Under-20 team, Mtonga, who was an assistant coach, helped the squad qualify to the African Youth Championship.
