After retiring as a footballer in 1987, Katowando attended a coaching course in Germany and upon returning he was named assistant to Patrick Phiri at Red Arrows.
He was later elevated as head coach for Arrows until the team was disbanded in 1992.
Katowando was appointed coach for reconstituted Young Arrows and later promoted to the main team, Red Arrows with Chabby Chabala.
