THE Zambia Police Service has banned any form of protests during the mourning period of President Michael Sata.

Police acting spokesperson Esther Katongo said the banning of protests was aimed at curbing any suspected violence that might ignite confusion during the mourning period.

“From this day onwards, the police will clamp down on any attempts of hosting protests and we shall be alert in order to avoid any confusion during this mourning period until we bury,” Ms Katongo said.

Ms Katongo also dismissed media reports that some police officers attempted to arrest Defence and Justice Minister Edgar Lungu after receiving orders from Acting President Guy Scott.

She said the reports were untrue and that police had no intentions of arresting Mr Lungu.

“As Zambia Police, we are preoccupied with our duty of maintaining law and order and on the alleged day, we were on the ground quelling the protests that had rocked some parts of Lusaka,” she said.

Ms Katongo said her office would, however, go ahead and invite Patriotic Front director of media and publicity, Brian Hapunda, to help with information that would enable them carry out investigations and ascertain the source of this information.
