FIVE people have died in separate road accidents around the country over the weekend.
In Kabwe, a man only identified as Kapaza, 38, of Nkole Village of Kapiri Mposhi District, died around 10:00 hours after jumping off a moving vehicle.
Police assistant public relations officer Esther Mwata-Katongo said the deceased’s body was in Kabwe General Hospital Mortuary.
In Kapiri Mposhi, a passenger identified as Geogina Muchindu, 35, of Stage 2, Mazabuka, died on the spot after a vehicle she was travelling in collided with another one which was coming from the opposite direction around 14:50 hours at Mulabashi area north-east of Kapiri Mposhi on Great North Road.
The incident happened after a driver of a Scania Truck registration number ABC 9711 belonging to KINTECH Investment Limited of Lusaka failed to keep to his lane and collided with a Toyota Hilux, registration number ALF 6596 which was being driven by Lumbita Tembo of Chirundu.
In Lusaka an unknown pedestrian died on the spot in a hit-and-run accident which happened around 03:30 hours behind Arcades Shopping Mall.
In Luapula, Emmanuel Daka, 29, of Milisai Village, Chief Kasomalwela of Chembe District died at Mansa General Hospital while four others sustained serious injuries after the Toyota Hiace minibus registration number ACV 251 they were on had a tyre burst, forcing the vehicle off
the road before it overturned.
The driver, Alick Nyirenda, 29, fled after the accident.
On the Copperbelt, a cyclist identified as Noah Mutembo aged between 60 and 65 died after he was hit by a Rav 4 registration number ERK 1 at 18:30 hours on the Kitwe Chingola Road.
Police also commended members of the public as well as cadres from various political parties for their peaceful conduct on Saturday when the body of President Michael Sata was being received at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport as well as during the procession.
Meanwhile, a 30-year-old woman of Namwala has allegedly been murdered by her husband who bolted after hacking her on the head with a sharp object.
Elina Kanoma, of Nakombama Village in Chief Bright Nalubamba’s area, was allegedly murdered by her husband, Castro Bulambo, 35, of the same area.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Mary Chikwanda said the incident happened on Friday around 15:00 hours.
Ms Chikwanda said the case was reported to Namwala Police Station by a cousin to the suspect, Obert Bulambo, that he had murdered his wife using an unknown object.
In a similar incident in Sinazongwe, police have arrested a 50-year-old man of Simuzila Village for allegedly murdering his 70-year-old wife.
Chobola Katwambantu is alleged to have poisoned his wife, Elita Chibale of the same village to death on Monday around 02:00 hours.
