A NYAU has been shot dead by a villager in Lundazi in unclear circumstances.
The Nyau had entered Kazumba village in Chief Mwasemphangwe’s area on Thursday last week but some villagers who were irritated by his presence, shot him in the back with a Greener Shotgun.
The incident happened around 15:00 hours on independence eve but the matter was only reported to police three days later.
The nyau was identified as Abel Zimba, 29, and it is not yet clear why he had gone into the village.
Eastern Province Police Deputy Commissioner Hudson Namachila said two villagers have been picked up for killing.
The suspects were arrested from their village and that the weapon used in the shooting had been confiscated.
Police in Lundazi have been instructed to exhume the body for a pathologist to carry out a postmortem as part of investigations.
Meanwhile, a 12-year-old girl in Chipata was defiled during jubilee celebrations, which took place at David Kaunda Stadium on Friday last week.
Mr Namachila said that police found the girl naked and bleeding whilst in a state of drunkenness.
He described the incident as unfortunate. The girl was too drunk to realise what had happened to her or who defiled her.
