15 killed during Uhuru celerations

FIFTEEN people died in road traffic accidents recorded countrywide during Zambia’s Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The 15 died out of 168 road traffic accidents recorded between Thursday last week and yesterday.
Zambia Police acting spokesperson Esther Katongo said Lusaka topped the list of accidents with 87 recorded and that eight of them were fatal.
“Of the 168 accidents, 14 were fatal in which 15 people died, 19 were serious accidents which left 21 people with serious injuries, in 25 accidents, 28 people sustained slight injuries, while 110 accidents were damages only,” she said.
The Copperbelt Province had 38 accidents but with no fatalities, Southern Province had 16 accidents and no loss of life, while Central Province had eight accidents, with one death.
Ms Katongo said Western Province recorded one death from seven accidents and Eastern Province had six accidents resulting in three deaths.
In Luapula Province, two people died in five road traffic accidents, Northern Province had one accident, while North-Western and Muchinga provinces did not record any accident. In another development, Ms Katongo said all the 25 bodies of the Gwembe boat accident on Lake Kariba have been retrieved and transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) awaiting postmortem today. The body of the baby that was buried after being retrieved had also been exhumed and transported to the UTH mortuary.
