HONEST Muyupi was on Thursday night crowned Mr Golden Jubilee champion after he outshined 10 other contestants in a tightly contested bodybuilding competition staged at Savoy Hotel in Ndola.
His triumph was a worthy warm up for the Mr Olympia Africa Amateur Championship that gets underway in Johannesburg, South Africa tomorrow.
With reigning Mr Zambia champion Sylvester Mwila shunning the Golden Jubilee contest to concentrate on the continental championship, Muyupi of Ndola’s Fitlink gymnasium put up an outstanding performance to scoop the K7,000 top prize.
This was the second victory for Muyupi in just a month after he won the Mr Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) contest held in Kitwe in September.
“I am very happy to win this competition. It has really motivated me so much that I am looking forward to a positive performance in Johannesburg because this is a good warm up for me,” Muyupi told journalists soon after being declared winner.
Daiman Phiri of Matero gymnasium was runner-up and pocketed K4,000 while Patrick Nyondo of CEC and Clement Chisebuka of Chawama walked away with K3,000 and K2,000 for emerging third and fourth, respectively.
Matero’s Emmanuel Nkonde completed the top five bracket with Enock Chanda of Chawama, Fitness Factory’s Joseph Njovu and Mulenga Kafula of Chawama finishing sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
The ninth position went to Moya Hatembo of Mufulira and Noah Sikabonga wrapped up the top 10 list.
Ndola Mayor Samuel Munthali hailed the Zambia Bodybuilding Federation and Fitness(ZBBFF) for staging a successful competition.
In a speech read for him by Kansenshi ward councillor Samuel Nyirenda, Munthali said the sport of body building had made tremendous progress in the last few years.
“I would like to commend the ZBBFF organising committee for wonderful preparations and for having considered to stage this event to the Copperbelt. Bodybuilding is a sport that has over time grown to recognisable standards, putting our country among those nations that have successfully hosted international events,” Munthali said.
ZBBFF president Danny Mkandawire paid tribute to the sponsors for the financial and material support rendered to the federation for the Mr Jubilee contest.
“We would to thank the sponsors who include Atlas Copco, Yellow Quik, New York Printers, Fitness Factory, Group R, Samfuel, Polite car hire and Ramces among others for their usal support,” Mkandawire said.
Mwila and Muyupi were scheduled to leave for South Africa yesterday ahead of tomorrow’s Mr Olympia Africa Amateur Championship in Johannesburg.
