A POLICE Post has been built in Luanshya’s Mikomfwa Township for the first time since the existence of the township.
The Mikomfwa Police Post was officially opened on Saturday last weekend.
Luanshya Member of Parliament Stephen Chungu said during the launch that Mikomfwa Township was one of the most vulnerable communities to crime in Luanshya and he was happy that it had a police post for the first time in the year that Zambia was celebrating its Golden Jubilee.
Mr Chungu said he was happy that the Patriotic Front (PF) Government had a policy to uplift the standards of living for its citizens through provision of adequate security.
“I am aware that it is a Government policy to uplift the standards of living of the citizens by providing adequate security and ensure the prevalence of law and order in our community especially that the nation is celebrating 50 years of independence,” he said.
He said the Luanshya police command had been having difficulties combating crime in Mikomfwa because of the distance between the nearest police station and the township.
Luanshya police also faced a challenge with transport which made them sometimes delay to reach scenes of crime.
This, he said, had resulted in mob justice in some instances.
A suspected gunman was burnt to death in Mikomfwa by irate residents recently.
Mr Chungu said because of that action, the Mikomfwa Ward leadership pushed for the construction of a police post together with the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) committee.
He said he was grateful for the support rendered by the Police Service in ensuring that the police post was established.
Mr Chungu also thanked Minister of Home Affairs Ngosa Simbyakula who graced the launch and for support.
