A TWENTY-SEVEN-year-old man of Serenje District has been arrested for attempting to rape his 57-year-old grandmother.
The grandmother is also nursing severe burns on her buttocks in the Serenje District hospital after her grandson Bupe Chobela pushed her onto a hot brazier after he failed to rape her.
Central Province Police chief, Standwell Lungu confirmed that the incident happened on Thursday around 20:00 hours at Lupampa Village in Chief Kabamba’s area in Serenje.
The suspect is in police custody and has not yet been charged.
Mr Lungu said preliminary investigations revealed that Chobela had told her grandmother prior to the incident that he had just returned from having sex with his mother and sister who were residing in another village.
Later, Chobela started following her every time she made a move, forcing the victim to go in her house where the accused followed with a brazier.
“We are still investigating the matter but preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect attempted to have sex with her grandmother but after failing he pushed her onto a brazier, ” he said.
Meanwhile, Central Province Permanent Secretary Edwidge Mutale has condemned the attack on the woman describing the action by Chobela as inhuman.
Ms Mutale said the law should be allowed to take its course.
She further described the action as a sign of demonic power which needed to be stopped through prayers.
