HOME Affairs Minister Ngosa Simbyakula has announced plans to construct a police academy in Luanshya District on the Copperbelt that will provide in-service training to Police officers.
Dr Simbyakula said the construction of the training school would start this year to enhance various skills among officers.
The minister was speaking Luanshya yesterday when he officially opened Mabungo Police Post in Mikomfwa Township.
“I will soon be coming here  for  the  groundbreaking of  the  Police academy that  will  provide  in-service  training  to Police officers,” he said.
“As Government, we want officers to be equipped with all sort of training and exposed to the modern scientific technology that will help reduce the levels of crime here in Luanshya.”
The new Police station unveiled yesterday was constructed at the cost of K250,000 using Constituency Development Funds (CDF).
Dr Simbyakula commended the CDF committee and the council for coming up with a decision to build a Police station in Mikonfwa Township where criminal activities were rampant.
He, however, called on the community to help the Police in combating crime in the area as economic development could only thrive in a peaceful and secure environment.
“Modern and effective policing requires cooperation from the community. It is the community that knows criminals because criminals live in the community,” he said.
Dr Simbyakula appealed to all CDF committees countrywide to consider constructing decent houses for Police officers when building Police stations.
Area Member of Parliament, Stephen Chungu said Mabungo Police Station was the first station to be constructed in the area since independence.
The area had in the past years witnessed a number of criminal activities which included daylight robberies at gunpoint.? Mr Chungu said the presence of the Police would now help combat criminal activities and protect the girl children from sexual molesters.
