5 die in road crash

FIVE people have died while three others have sustained serious injuries following a road traffic accident on Nakonde-Kasama Road.
The accident happened after an unregistered Land Cruiser Prado they were traveling in overturned due to suspected speeding.
Police spokesperson Charity Chanda said the victims were travelling to Mungwi on Sunday when the accident occurred around 18:00 hours.
“Among the deceased, two were a couple identified as Mary Mutale Mulenga, aged 66, and Vincent Mulenga, 81, while the others have been identified as Isaac Friday Sinkala, aged 36, an unidentified male aged between 15 and 20 and a female juvenile aged 10,” Ms Chanda said in a statement.
She said all the injured had been admitted to Kasama General Hospital while the bodies of the deceased were at the hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Meanwhile, nine Rufunsa road traffic accident victims have been evacuated to  Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital and University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka for medical attention.
Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital deputy managing director Clarence Chiluba told the Times of Zambia in Lusaka yesterday that following the accident on Saturday in which three people died, 10 were evacuated to the hospital on Sunday.
Dr Chiluba said of the 10, two were referred to UTH for maxillofacial consultation while one was discharged.
“We are remaining with seven. One is in the Intensive Care Unit very sick,” he said.
Three people died on the spot while 18 others were injured following a head-on collision between a Toyota Hiace minibus and a Toyota Regius bus on Great East Road.
Two people died from the Hiace minibus which was carrying 16 passengers while one died from the other vehicle which had six passengers.
