THE construction of Gwembe and Namwala District hospitals has been completed, Southern Province Medical Officer Jelita Chinyonga has said.
Gwembe District Hospital phase-one project started in 2013 and cost of about K11 million, while construction of another multi-million Kwacha Namwala District Hospital started in 2012
Health Deputy Minister Chitalu Chilufya recently inspected the newly built Namwala hospital which had received about five doctors and 13 nurses to meet health needs of people.
In an interview, Dr Chinyonga said the two hospitals, which were part of the many infrastructure development projects in the province, would be commissioned soon.
She said the completion of the hospitals was an achievement in fostering more quality health services.
“As a province, we are happy with increased health infrastructure and now these two hospitals have been completed,” she said.
Namwala District Commissioner (DC) Gevar Nsanzya said the hospital had boosted the morale of health workers in the district.
Mr Nsanzya said that the Ministry of Health had also constructed about four staff houses for health workers at the hospital and more would be built soon.
Meanwhile, an outreach mobile hospital unit set up at Choma General Hospital for people to access specialist treatment services as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, would close today.
Dr Chinyonga said people were accessing specialist treatment from the mobile hospital outreach aimed at reducing the waiting list of patients.
She said, a cancer screening centre had also been opened at Choma General Hospital with support from Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia.
