MORE than 4,800 X 50 Kilogramme (KG) bags of imported Urea fertiliser have been delivered to Eastern Province.
The consignment arrived in the Province through Mwami Border Post.
The Urea fertiliser is part of the fertiliser that was imported from Saudi Arabia through Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania.
Eastern Province agricultural and livestock coordinator Obvious
Kabinda confirmed in Chipata yesterday the arrival of the 4,800 bags of fertiliser.
Dr Kabinda said the fertiliser would be distributed to the small-scale farmers in the province.
“In each truck there were about 600 bags of fertiliser and at least eight trucks entered through Mwami Border Post meaning they had to pass through Malawi from Dar-es-Salaam,” he said.
Dr Kabinda said D-Compound was already available in the province, adding that some farmers have already started receiving the farming inputs.
He also said the team from his ministry was currently fumigating the reserves of the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) in the province.
He said the fumigators were fumigating the maize stocks at Mtilizi depot in Nyimba District.
Dr Kabinda said the fumigation was to ensure that the maize that was bought last year did not go to waste in various depots.
He also said the rehabilitation of Chipata’s fish hatchery at the fisheries department including rehabilitation of Kakumbi Tsetse Research Station in Mfuwe of Mambwe District had been completed.
Dr Kabinda said the two facilities would soon be officially launched.
