judges hammerBy CHARITY MOONGA –
THE Lusaka Fast Track court on traffic offences has convicted an employee of the Zambia Bureau of Standard for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Magistrate Chibesa Kunda has since sentenced Chanda Musenge to four months simple imprisonment for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Musenge on October 8, 2014 was driving an unregistered BMW on a public road under the influence of alcohol beyond the permissible limit of 0.38 mg breath count.
Recently, the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) and the Judiciary signed a Memorandum of Understanding to roll out the Fast Track Courts on traffic offences.
The MoU is aimed at reducing road carnage through the prosecution of road traffic offenders thereby deterring would- be offenders.
The Fast Track courts have also proved to be a good vehicle to use in changing the bad driver attitude and behaviour on public roads.
RTSA acting senior public relations manager Fredrick Mubanga said the agency was on high alert to screen all motorists and ensure that no motorist flout road traffic regulations with impunity.
“We advise all motorists to adhere to road traffic regulations as those who will be found wanting will face the wrath of the law. Our target is to have an accident free golden jubilee celebration,” Mr Mubanga said.
