A FORMER BANK ABC sales representative has been sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour for swindling eight clients out of over K20,000.
Magistrate Misozi Banda convicted Gwen Mwila, 21, of house number 2 Jacaranda Road in the town Centre for theft by servant involving K22,600.
Facts of the case were that Mwila between May 11 and July 10, this year, collected different amounts of money from eight clients who wanted to open accounts with Bank ABC purporting that she was going to open up accounts and deposit the money on their behalf.
Mwila collected K300 from Harry Chinyanta 51, of house number 2468 Pamodzi Township, K600 from Esther Zulu, 30, a teacher, K4, 000 from Catherine Nakamba, K1, 000 from Linililani Mbewe.
She also collected K5, 000 from Benjamin Chanda, K8,000 from Grace Zulu and K2,100 from prudence Malama.
Mwila in her mitigation asked the court to give her chance to clear all debts that she owed the bank’s clients.
She said that if she was sent to prison, the people that she stole from would suffer more as their money would not be refunded.
Mwila said she was too young to go to prison and that she would never repeat her actions.
However, Ms Banda said Mwila had taken advantage of some of the clients that she stole money from because they were illiterate and deprived them of their money.
