POLICE in Kasama have impounded hundreds of motor vehicles and fined motorists in an attempt to crackdown on criminal activities and reduce cases of road carnage.
Northern Province police chief Charity Katanga said the operation which began on September 30, had raised in excess of K30,000 in fines that had been deposited into Government coffers.
The operation that has seen an increased police presence across the town will run for the next several weeks to enforce compliance among road users most of whom, it was discovered, where unlicenced drivers.
Ms Katanga said among the cars being impounded were unregistered motor vehicles as it had also been observed that perpetrators of many crimes where in the habit of using such vehicles to cover their tracks.
Other motorists saw their vehicles impounded for offences such overloading, smoking and eating, while behind the wheel.
The first day of operations saw a total of 110 motor vehicles including trucks being impounded and K12,450 raised.
The second and third days saw a combined total of 125 cars impounded and K17, 200 raised through fines.
“We want to bring sanity and reduce accidents on our roads through continuous inspection and patrols,” Ms Katanga said.
